Informed Consent for Apopliprotein E (APOE) Genetic Testing
The practitioner must discuss the Lipid Profiling with the patient. The patient either consents or does not consent to their APOE genotype being reported.
The patient understands that their saliva sample will be used to provide a Genomic Wellness Report which includes analysis of the APOE gene. The APOE gene also affects the risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease (AD) however it is not diagnostic for AD and it is a poor prognostic marker for development of AD.
It has been explained to me and I understand that:
- ApoE genotyping may be ordered to help guide lipid treatment specifically in cases of high cholesterol and triglyceride levels.
- Statins are usually considered the treatment of choice to decrease the risk of developing CVD. However, there is a wide variability in the response to these lipid-lowering drugs that is in part influenced by the Apo E genotype.
- Though appropriately responsive to a low fat diet, people with ApoE ε4 allele may be less likely than those with ApoE ε2 to respond to statins by decreasing their levels of LDL-C and may require adjustments to their treatment plans. Dietary adjustment and statin drugs are the preferred agents for lipid-lowering therapy. Apo E genotyping may be used to provide supplemental information.
